Description

WPDO Cast Iron Worm Gearbox — Product Overview

Processing vessels, large mixers, and vertical conveyor drives that require both a vertical upward output shaft and a direct IEC motor flange connection face a specific engineering challenge: achieving both features without custom fabrication or multi-component adaptor chains. The WPDO Single Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox resolves this precisely — the D-type split housing integrates an IEC motor flange while the O-type output delivers the vertical upward shaft. The result is a complete motorised vertical drive in a single, maintainable cast iron unit, covering output torques from 20 Nm (size 40 at 1/5) to 3,025 Nm (size 250 at 1/60).

Product Structure

WPDO worm gearbox internal structure components

The WP series cast iron worm gearbox is built from precision-manufactured components, each selected for maximum performance and longevity:

■ Housing (Box Body)
FC20+ grey cast iron, precision-machined mounting faces, integrated air vent, oil gauge boss, and drain plug.
■ Worm Shaft (Input Shaft)
20CrMnTi case-hardened steel, precision-ground thread profile, 55–60 HRC surface hardness. Supported by twin tapered roller bearings.
■ Worm Wheel
Tin-bronze alloy ZCuSn10Pb1, precision hobbed tooth profile, press-fitted to cast iron hub. Provides superior anti-galling properties in the worm mesh.
■ Output Shaft
45# alloy steel, heat treated to 250–280 HB, precision-machined keyway, supported by deep groove ball bearings or tapered rollers (size-dependent).
■ Sealing System
National oil seal lips on all shaft exits. O-ring seal on housing joints. Eliminates contamination ingress and prevents lubricant loss.
■ Bearings
All bearings are premium-grade (C3 clearance class), selected for the specific radial and axial load profile of each shaft position and operating configuration.

Core Features & Benefits

■ D+O Combination: IEC Flange Input + Vertical Upward Output

The WPDO achieves what two separate products achieve separately: D-type IEC motor flange for direct motor mounting and O-type vertical upward output shaft for vertical drive applications — in one compact cast iron housing.

■ Split Housing for Vertical Drive In-Situ Maintenance

The D-split housing separation allows top-cover removal without disconnecting the motor or the agitator shaft. For vertically-mounted agitator drives, this in-situ access is enormously valuable — no crane lift required for routine maintenance.

■ O-Type Output Shaft: Axial Load Certified

The WPDO vertical output shaft bearings and seals are identically specified to the WPO, carrying the same axial load certification and vertical-rated lip seal design.

■ Input Power Range: 0.12–15 kW

The WPDO motor flange system covers the complete power range from size 40 (M8 flange bolts, 0.12 kW) to size 250 (M16 bolts, 15 kW), accommodating the full spectrum of commercial agitator motor sizes.

■ Anti-Corrosion Coating System for Wet Environments

Standard epoxy primer/polyurethane topcoat provides resistance to the process chemicals, cleaning agents, and moisture typical of food, pharmaceutical, and chemical processing environments.

■ Bilateral Input Shaft on IEC Flange

The D-type IEC flange is centrally located; the input bore is accessible from both sides, allowing motor positioning on either the left or right of the overhead assembly.

Industry Applications — WPDO

cast iron single speed worm gearboxes industrial applications

Motorised Agitator Assemblies

The WPDO is the standard specification for complete motorised agitator assemblies in chemical, food, and pharmaceutical manufacturing — IEC motor direct-mounts to the D-flange, agitator shaft to the O-output, no external components.

Cement & Mining Vertical Screw Drives

Heavy-duty vertical screw conveyors in cement and mining operations require motorised vertical drives that can be serviced in position. The WPDO D-split housing provides the required field-service access without dismantling the entire drive assembly.

Wastewater Treatment Drives

Wastewater treatment paddle mixers and clarifier drives require corrosion-resistant motorised vertical drives. The WPDO cast iron housing and sealed IEC motor flange resist the aggressive wastewater environment far better than aluminium alternatives.

Bulk Solids Vertical Mixing

Cement blenders, lime mixers, and mineral conditioning tanks all use motorised vertical agitator drives. The WPDO’s direct IEC motor mount eliminates the coupling component most susceptible to corrosion and misalignment in dusty mineral processing environments.

Paper Mill Chest Agitators

Paper mill stock chests and pulping vessels use vertical agitator drives continuously. The WPDO’s split housing allows worm wheel inspection during planned shutdowns without full agitator strip-down — critical for minimising planned maintenance windows.

Quality Control & Certifications

Ever-power cast iron worm gearbox manufacturing facility

✎ ISO 9001:2000 Certified

We hold ISO 9001:2000 International Quality System Certification — the first in our industry category to achieve this standard. Every WPDO is manufactured, assembled, and tested under this quality framework.

✎ CE Marking

Full CE marking confirms compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requirements — covering safety, design standards, and manufacturing quality for mechanical power transmission equipment.

✎ Pre-Shipment Testing

Every unit undergoes: Noise test (below 68 dB(A) at rated load), Oil leak test (30-minute pressurisation), and Torque transmission test (output torque within ±5% of rated). Failed units are reworked — not shipped.

✎ FC20+ Material Certification

Housing castings are verified by material test certificates for FC20 grade (220 MPa minimum tensile strength). Hardness testing (160–200 HB) and ultrasonic testing for internal defects are performed on size 135 and above.

Frequently Asked Questions — WPDO

▶ Can the WPDO be used with servo motors for precision mixing control?
Yes. The WPDO IEC flange accepts servo motor adaptor plates for servo motor models from major manufacturers. Servo compatibility is subject to verifying the servo motor’s flange dimensions (LA, LB, LC) against the WPDO size-specific flange data. Contact our technical team for servo motor compatibility confirmation.
▶ Is the WPDO flange always on the same side as the WPO input shaft?
The WPDO flange is positioned at the S-type (top) or A-type (bottom) input location depending on variant. For standard WPDO, the motor mounts from the A-position (below, horizontal IEC flange facing laterally). Refer to the WPDO shaft direction diagram for your specific configuration. All configurations are available from catalogue.
▶ How does the D-split housing improve maintenance on a ceiling/vessel-top mounted unit?
In a vessel-top or ceiling-mounted WPDO, conventional solid-housing service requires lowering the entire gearbox — typically requiring crane access. The D-split allows only the housing cover to be removed (lifted off) while the base and motor remain secured to the vessel head. Worm wheel access, bearing inspection, and seal replacement can all be performed from standing height.
▶ Does the WPDO have a different oil capacity from the WPO?
The oil capacity between WPDO and WPO for the same centre distance size is essentially identical — the D-split housing modification does not alter the internal oil sump volume. However, the fill level marking on the oil gauge is adjusted to account for the D-housing cover internal volume. Use WPDO-specific oil fill quantities from the installation document.
▶ What is the maximum continuous torque the WPDO vertical output shaft can sustain?
Continuous output torque ratings are identical to the standard WP series for the same size and ratio, as the worm gear transmission is unchanged. The O-type output shaft bearings are rated for the same continuous radial and axial loads as the WPO. Refer to the rated output torque table for each size/ratio combination.
