Double-Stage Product Structure

WPEDS double speed worm gearbox internal structure

The WPE double-stage housing contains two complete worm gear stages in one precision-machined cast iron body, with two independent oil chambers:

■ Primary Stage (Input Side)
First worm shaft and bronze wheel — receives motor power, produces first reduction. Higher-speed, lower-torque stage optimised for input speed operating conditions.
■ Intermediate Shaft
Connects primary stage output to secondary stage input. Precision-machined, supported by C3-clearance bearings, transmits intermediate torque and speed between the two stages.
■ Secondary Stage (Output Side)
Second worm shaft and bronze wheel — lower speed, higher torque. Matched-pair manufacturing with primary stage ensures consistent inter-stage noise and efficiency throughout service life.
■ Dual Independent Oil Chambers
Two oil chambers — one per stage — each filled and monitored separately. Independent optimisation of lubrication viscosity and fill level per stage is a key advantage over two-gearbox cascade arrangements.
■ Air Vents & Oil Gauges (×2)
Two air vents and two oil gauges — one per chamber — provide independent pressure management and oil level monitoring for each stage throughout operation.
■ FC20+ Dual-Chamber Housing
Single FC20+ cast iron casting forms both chambers with no gaskets between them. Monolithic rigidity prevents inter-chamber flex that could misalign intermediate shaft bearings.

Core Features & Benefits

■ D-IEC Flange (S-Type Overhead) + Double-Stage + D-Split: Three Specifications One Unit

WPEDS solves the three-way challenge: overhead IEC motor (D+S), ultra-high ratio (double-stage), field-maintainability (D-split). Each feature independently justifies an engineering decision; their combination in one unit is the WPEDS’s defining value.

■ Overhead Motor Weight Support — S-Type IEC Flange Rated

The WPEDS IEC flange is rated for cantilevered motor mounting in the overhead position across all standard IEC motor frames. For very heavy motors (>150 kg at sizes 155–250), an overhead motor support stand is recommended.

■ D-Split Housing Doubles Service Access at Elevated Positions

For double-stage units in elevated overhead-motor installations, D-split in-situ access is enormously valuable — avoiding crane access to dismount the overhead motor mount or driven machine for routine worm wheel service.

■ S-Type Input Oil Circuit — Validated for Combined D+S Geometry

The WPEDS oil circuit is validated for the upward input shaft orientation in the D-type split housing geometry. Oil fill quantities differ from the WPEDA (A-type) — always use WPEDS-specific installation data.

■ 9 Ratio Steps from 1/200 to 1/900

All nine ratio steps provide output speeds from 7.5 RPM down to 1.67 RPM from standard 1,500 RPM input, covering all ultra-slow overhead drive requirements in process plants.

■ CE and ISO 9001:2000 Certified — Meets Australian Standards

Full CE marking and ISO 9001:2000 certification meets Australian engineering procurement requirements for mechanical power transmission in large-scale industrial installations.

Customer Reviews & Case Studies

★★★★★

“WPEDS on our elevated process plant drives at 8m height. D-split means our maintenance team uses a work platform to remove the housing cover — not a crane to lower the entire gearbox. This safety improvement alone justified the WPEDS specification. IEC motor mount is fast to service too.”

Colin MacPherson — Heavy Industry Process Solutions

Frequently Asked Questions — WPEDS

▶ How is the WPEDS installed at an elevated drive station?
Install the WPEDS base to mounting structure. D-type IEC flange faces upward (S-orientation). Raise the motor from below or lower from above onto the flange. Install flange bolts. Connect driven machine to output shaft. Fill both oil chambers per orientation-specific quantities from the WPEDS installation sheet.
▶ Can the WPEDS be serviced without a crane at elevated positions?
Yes — this is a primary benefit. The D-split housing cover is removed by loosening cover bolts and lifting off. For elevated installations, this cover lift requires only a chain hoist rated for the cover weight (20–80 kg by size). Both worm stages are then accessible from the open housing without lowering the entire gearbox.
▶ What motor frame sizes are compatible with the WPEDS IEC flange in S-orientation?
WPEDS flange compatibility is identical to WPEDA (same D-type IEC flange dimensions) — S-orientation affects only the input bore position, not the flange bolt circle. Frames M8 (sizes 40–70) to M16 (sizes 155–250) are compatible. Verify motor LA, LB, LC dimensions against the WPEDS table for your size combination.
▶ Is there a risk of oil pooling at the primary stage input in S-orientation?
The primary stage (motor/input side) in S-orientation has the worm shaft entering from above. The oil circuit is designed to prevent pooling at the input bore seal. The S-type input seal uses enhanced lip pressure to resist the oil column resting on it from above — same engineered approach used in the single-stage WPS and WPDS.
▶ How does WPEDS compare to a planetary gearbox for the same elevated drive?
WPEDS advantages: cast iron housing robustness, self-locking at high ratios, lower cost, in-situ field maintenance via D-split. Planetary advantages: higher efficiency at lower ratios, more compact at equivalent torque. For elevated process drives requiring >1/100 ratio with self-locking and rugged field service, WPEDS is typically the more practical and economical solution.
