Description
WPEDS Double Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox
Large process plants with standardised overhead motor mounting platforms, direct IEC motor connections, and ultra-slow drive requirements face a three-specification challenge: overhead IEC motor (D+S), extreme double-stage ratio, and D-split housing for field maintainability at elevated positions. The WPEDS Double Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox satisfies all three simultaneously. It is the single catalogue unit that replaces a custom-engineered multi-component drive arrangement for overhead motorised slow process drives across refineries, cement plants, mineral processing facilities, and large chemical plants globally.

Double-Stage Product Structure

The WPE double-stage housing contains two complete worm gear stages in one precision-machined cast iron body, with two independent oil chambers:
First worm shaft and bronze wheel — receives motor power, produces first reduction. Higher-speed, lower-torque stage optimised for input speed operating conditions.
Connects primary stage output to secondary stage input. Precision-machined, supported by C3-clearance bearings, transmits intermediate torque and speed between the two stages.
Second worm shaft and bronze wheel — lower speed, higher torque. Matched-pair manufacturing with primary stage ensures consistent inter-stage noise and efficiency throughout service life.
Two oil chambers — one per stage — each filled and monitored separately. Independent optimisation of lubrication viscosity and fill level per stage is a key advantage over two-gearbox cascade arrangements.
Two air vents and two oil gauges — one per chamber — provide independent pressure management and oil level monitoring for each stage throughout operation.
Single FC20+ cast iron casting forms both chambers with no gaskets between them. Monolithic rigidity prevents inter-chamber flex that could misalign intermediate shaft bearings.
Core Features & Benefits
■ D-IEC Flange (S-Type Overhead) + Double-Stage + D-Split: Three Specifications One Unit
WPEDS solves the three-way challenge: overhead IEC motor (D+S), ultra-high ratio (double-stage), field-maintainability (D-split). Each feature independently justifies an engineering decision; their combination in one unit is the WPEDS’s defining value.
■ Overhead Motor Weight Support — S-Type IEC Flange Rated
The WPEDS IEC flange is rated for cantilevered motor mounting in the overhead position across all standard IEC motor frames. For very heavy motors (>150 kg at sizes 155–250), an overhead motor support stand is recommended.
■ D-Split Housing Doubles Service Access at Elevated Positions
For double-stage units in elevated overhead-motor installations, D-split in-situ access is enormously valuable — avoiding crane access to dismount the overhead motor mount or driven machine for routine worm wheel service.
■ S-Type Input Oil Circuit — Validated for Combined D+S Geometry
The WPEDS oil circuit is validated for the upward input shaft orientation in the D-type split housing geometry. Oil fill quantities differ from the WPEDA (A-type) — always use WPEDS-specific installation data.
■ 9 Ratio Steps from 1/200 to 1/900
All nine ratio steps provide output speeds from 7.5 RPM down to 1.67 RPM from standard 1,500 RPM input, covering all ultra-slow overhead drive requirements in process plants.
■ CE and ISO 9001:2000 Certified — Meets Australian Standards
Full CE marking and ISO 9001:2000 certification meets Australian engineering procurement requirements for mechanical power transmission in large-scale industrial installations.
Industry Applications — WPEDS

⚙ Large Plant Overhead Motorised Slow Drives
Large-scale process plants with standardised overhead motor mounting and direct IEC connections use the WPEDS for all ultra-slow drives as a single procurement specification.
⚔ Chemical Plant Slow Overhead Motor Drives
Chemical plants where motor positioning above the drive is specified for safety segregation use the WPEDS for very low agitation and conveying speeds with direct overhead IEC motor mounting.
⚒ OEM Ultra-Slow Motorised Machines — Overhead Motor
OEM machine designers requiring overhead motor configurations with double-stage ratio specify the WPEDS as their standard drive unit, eliminating two components (overhead adaptor + second stage) from every machine BOM.
☷ High-Access Elevated Drive Stations
Elevated drive stations requiring the fewest possible maintenance interventions use the WPEDS D-split housing to perform in-situ inspection without full gearbox removal — a significant safety advantage at height.
⚊ Environmental Equipment — Overhead Motor Slow Drives
Sludge de-watering presses, slow environmental separators with overhead motor configurations use the WPEDS for the appropriate overhead IEC motor mount combined with ultra-low speed.

Quality Control & Certifications

✎ ISO 9001:2000 Certified
Every WPEDS is manufactured, assembled, and tested under the ISO 9001:2000 quality management framework. We were among the first in our industry category to achieve this certification.
✎ CE Marking
Full CE marking confirms compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC — covering safety, design standards, and manufacturing quality for mechanical power transmission equipment including double-stage worm gearboxes.
✎ Pre-Shipment Testing (Every Unit)
Noise test (below 72 dB(A) at rated load), oil leak test (30-minute pressurisation, both chambers), torque transmission test (output torque within ±5% of rated). Failed units are reworked — not shipped.
✎ Matched-Pair Manufacturing
Both worm wheel sets for each double-stage unit are manufactured in the same production batch, ensuring tooth profile consistency between primary and secondary stages. This matched-pair quality assurance is unique to our double-stage production process.

Customer Reviews & Case Studies
“WPEDS on our elevated process plant drives at 8m height. D-split means our maintenance team uses a work platform to remove the housing cover — not a crane to lower the entire gearbox. This safety improvement alone justified the WPEDS specification. IEC motor mount is fast to service too.”
Australia 🇦🇺
“Specified WPEDS for our overhead motor platform drives. S-input double-stage in one unit eliminated a second gearbox from every elevated drive position. Simplified spare parts holding significantly — one SKU for all elevated slow drives.”
Denmark 🇩🇰
“WPEDS drives our overhead slow conveyor drives at our cement packaging line. Elevated mounting with overhead IEC motor is our plant standard. Cast iron durability in the cement dust atmosphere is excellent — far better than sealed aluminium units.”
India 🇮🇳
“WPEDS on our elevated mixing drives. Triple specification — overhead motor, high ratio, split housing — all in one standard catalogue unit. Very practical engineering solution. Quality consistent across 12 units ordered over two years.”
