Description

WPEKS Double Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox

Overhead motor drives that must also connect to the driven shaft via hollow bore — eliminating the coupling on the most mechanically demanding side — while delivering ratios far beyond single-stage capability, represent a triple-specification challenge. The WPEKS Double Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox addresses this precisely: S-type input shaft (overhead motor), K-type hollow bore output (direct shaft connection), and double-stage worm reduction (1/200–1/900) in a single cast iron housing. It is the single-unit solution for the overhead-motor + shaft-mount + extreme-ratio combination.

Double-Stage Product Structure

WPEKS double speed worm gearbox internal structure

The WPE double-stage housing contains two complete worm gear stages in one precision-machined cast iron body, with two independent oil chambers:

■ Primary Stage (Input Side)
First worm shaft and bronze wheel — receives motor power, produces first reduction. Higher-speed, lower-torque stage optimised for input speed operating conditions.
■ Intermediate Shaft
Connects primary stage output to secondary stage input. Precision-machined, supported by C3-clearance bearings, transmits intermediate torque and speed between the two stages.
■ Secondary Stage (Output Side)
Second worm shaft and bronze wheel — lower speed, higher torque. Matched-pair manufacturing with primary stage ensures consistent inter-stage noise and efficiency throughout service life.
■ Dual Independent Oil Chambers
Two oil chambers — one per stage — each filled and monitored separately. Independent optimisation of lubrication viscosity and fill level per stage is a key advantage over two-gearbox cascade arrangements.
■ Air Vents & Oil Gauges (×2)
Two air vents and two oil gauges — one per chamber — provide independent pressure management and oil level monitoring for each stage throughout operation.
■ FC20+ Dual-Chamber Housing
Single FC20+ cast iron casting forms both chambers with no gaskets between them. Monolithic rigidity prevents inter-chamber flex that could misalign intermediate shaft bearings.

Core Features & Benefits

■ S + K + Double-Stage: Overhead-Motor Shaft-Mount Extreme-Ratio in One Unit

Three specialised specifications combined in one housing: overhead motor geometry (S-input), coupling-free shaft connection (K hollow bore), ultra-high ratio (double-stage worm). Each feature eliminates one component from a conventional multi-part arrangement.

■ K Bore Oriented for Overhead S+K Geometry

The hollow output bore is positioned and sealed for operation in conjunction with the S-type input overhead orientation. Oil seals are specifically selected for the S+K combined geometry.

■ Full Double-Stage Torque Through Hollow Bore

The WPEKS K-type hollow bore is rated for the full double-stage output torque — identical torque ratings to the WPES solid output shaft for the same size combination. No derating for hollow bore.

■ S-Type Input Oil Circuit — Validated for S+K Geometry

Oil distribution channels validated for the unique combination of S-type input geometry and K-type output geometry in the double-stage housing. Ensures proper lubrication of both stages in the combined S+K configuration.

■ Torque Arm Boss for Shaft-Mount Housing Restraint

When installed as a shaft-mount (hollow bore onto driven shaft), the WPEKS housing torque arm boss provides the housing restraint anchor point. S-type input orientation is compatible with torque arm shaft-mount installation.

■ Available in 9 Sizes — Full Double-Stage Range

WPEKS covers the full WPE double-stage size range (40–250 mm combined), providing output torques from 250 Nm (size 40–70 at 1/200) to 6,050 Nm (size 155–250) through the hollow bore.

Industry Applications — WPEKS

WP double speed cast iron worm gearboxes

Overhead Motor Shaft-Mount Extreme-Ratio Agitators

Agitator drives where the motor must be overhead, the agitator shaft must insert through a hollow bore, and the ratio must exceed 1/60 are the exact application profile of the WPEKS.

Slow Overhead-Driven Shaft-Mount Conveyors

Conveyor head shaft-mount drives with overhead motor positions and very slow belt speeds combine the WPEKS’s S-input, K hollow bore, and double-stage ratio in the most compact possible configuration.

Extreme-Ratio Fan Shaft Drives — Overhead Motor

Industrial fans with very slow rotation and overhead motor mounting use the WPEKS hollow bore shaft-mount for direct fan shaft engagement at ultra-low speeds.

Ceiling-Mount Slow Turntable Drives

Ceiling-mounted turntable and indexing table drives requiring very slow rotation (1–5 RPM) with the motor overhead and the turntable shaft passing through the hollow bore use the WPEKS.

Any S + K + Double-Stage Requirement

Any process equipment specification combining overhead motor (S), hollow bore output (K), and >1/60 ratio is best served by the WPEKS — the only standard catalogue product addressing all three simultaneously.

Quality Control & Certifications

Ever-power cast iron worm gearbox manufacturing facility

✎ ISO 9001:2000 Certified

Every WPEKS is manufactured, assembled, and tested under the ISO 9001:2000 quality management framework. We were among the first in our industry category to achieve this certification.

✎ CE Marking

Full CE marking confirms compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC — covering safety, design standards, and manufacturing quality for mechanical power transmission equipment including double-stage worm gearboxes.

✎ Pre-Shipment Testing (Every Unit)

Noise test (below 72 dB(A) at rated load), oil leak test (30-minute pressurisation, both chambers), torque transmission test (output torque within ±5% of rated). Failed units are reworked — not shipped.

✎ Matched-Pair Manufacturing

Both worm wheel sets for each double-stage unit are manufactured in the same production batch, ensuring tooth profile consistency between primary and secondary stages. This matched-pair quality assurance is unique to our double-stage production process.

Frequently Asked Questions — WPEKS

▶ How does the WPEKS torque arm work with overhead motor and hollow bore?
In WPEKS shaft-mount installations, the hollow bore engages the driven shaft. The torque arm attached to the WPEKS housing provides housing restraint. The overhead motor (S-input) remains coupled to the input shaft. The assembly — motor above, gearbox shaft-mounted below — is fully restrained by the torque arm at the housing.
▶ Can the WPEKS be used without a torque arm if foot-mounted?
Yes. If the WPEKS is foot-mounted to a structural base AND the hollow bore is also engaged on the driven shaft, the torque reaction is provided by the foot mount and no separate torque arm is required. Ensure foot mount bolts are rated for the full housing reaction torque.
▶ Is the S-input oil fill specification the same as for WPEA (A-type)?
No. WPEKS (S-type input) has different oil fill levels than WPEA (A-type input) due to different worm shaft submersion depth in S-orientation. Use WPEKS-specific oil fill tables in the installation guide for both chambers. Do not use WPEA oil quantities in a WPEKS installation.
▶ What are the hollow bore diameters for the WPEKS?
WPEKS hollow bore diameters are identical to the WPEKA for each size combination: 40–70=33.3mm, 50–80=38.3mm, 60–100=43.3mm, 70–120=48.8mm, 80–135=64.4mm, 100–155=74.9mm, 120–175=85.4mm, 135–200=90.4mm, 155–250=90mm.
▶ Can a VFD be used with WPEKS for variable output speed?
Yes, with conditions. VFD motor speed should be maintained above 600 RPM input to ensure adequate double-stage lubrication from splash distribution. For WPEKS with S-type input, ensure the VFD maintains consistent speed during startup to prevent primary stage oil starvation. A warm-up cycle at minimum input speed is recommended for cold starts below 0°C ambient.
