Description

WPS Cast Iron Worm Gearbox — Product Overview

Overhead motor mounting — where the motor sits above the gearbox with its shaft pointing downward — is one of the most space-efficient drive configurations for conveyors, mixers, and processing equipment with restricted floor space. However, it demands a gearbox engineered specifically for top-entry input: correct oil distribution for the S-type shaft orientation, verified bearing arrangements for upward input shaft loads, and dimensional compatibility with overhead motor mounting brackets. The WPS Single Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox is purpose-built for exactly this configuration, with the S-type input shaft entering from above, delivering the same 17–2,371 Nm output torque range as the WPA in a drive layout that recovers valuable floor space in factories, packaging halls, and processing plants.

Product Structure

WPS worm gearbox internal structure components

The WP series cast iron worm gearbox is built from precision-manufactured components, each selected for maximum performance and longevity:

■ Housing (Box Body)
FC20+ grey cast iron, precision-machined mounting faces, integrated air vent, oil gauge boss, and drain plug.
■ Worm Shaft (Input Shaft)
20CrMnTi case-hardened steel, precision-ground thread profile, 55–60 HRC surface hardness. Supported by twin tapered roller bearings.
■ Worm Wheel
Tin-bronze alloy ZCuSn10Pb1, precision hobbed tooth profile, press-fitted to cast iron hub. Provides superior anti-galling properties in the worm mesh.
■ Output Shaft
45# alloy steel, heat treated to 250–280 HB, precision-machined keyway, supported by deep groove ball bearings or tapered rollers (size-dependent).
■ Sealing System
National oil seal lips on all shaft exits. O-ring seal on housing joints. Eliminates contamination ingress and prevents lubricant loss.
■ Bearings
All bearings are premium-grade (C3 clearance class), selected for the specific radial and axial load profile of each shaft position and operating configuration.

Core Features & Benefits

■ S-Type Input: Shaft Enters From Above — Purpose-Built Geometry

The WPS worm shaft geometry is engineered for upward input entry, with bearing preloads and oil channels configured for S-orientation. This is not a field-modified WPA — it is a purpose-designed input configuration with fully optimised internals.

■ Vertical Motor Mounting Bracket Compatibility

The WPS housing geometry accommodates standard vertical motor mounting brackets without custom fabrication, giving machine designers a turn-key overhead drive solution from standard catalogue components.

■ Identical FC20+ Housing — Same Ruggedness as WPA

The S-type input modification does not alter the housing material grade or wall thickness. All WPS units retain the full FC20+ cast iron mechanical specification, providing identical impact resistance and thermal performance.

■ Oil Lubrication Verified for S-Orientation

The internal oil distribution channels are specifically validated for the S-input orientation. Oil fill levels are adjusted to compensate for the different worm submersion depth in this configuration.

■ Bilateral Input Shaft — Left or Right Motor Connection

Even in the S-type orientation, the input shaft exits from both sides, allowing the motor to connect from the left or right of the gearbox without affecting the overhead shaft entry direction.

■ Full Ratio Range 1/5–1/60 Maintained

All 9 standard ratios (1/5, 1/10, 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50, 1/60) are available in the WPS, giving designers the same selection flexibility as the horizontal-input WPA.

Industry Applications — WPS

cast iron single speed worm gearboxes industrial applications

Overhead Drive Conveyors

Conveyors where the motor must mount above the gearbox — particularly common in food processing facilities with strict hygienic zone layouts — use the WPS to position the motor overhead while keeping the conveyor drive at floor level.

Space-Constrained Packaging Halls

In packaging production halls where floor space is premium, the WPS overhead motor configuration reduces the total drive footprint by positioning the motor above rather than beside the gearbox.

Chemical Reactor Drives

Chemical plant stirrer drives often require the motor to mount above the vessel for safety and maintenance access reasons. The WPS directly supports this geometry with its S-type upward input shaft.

Beverage & Food Processing Equipment

Food and beverage equipment frequently uses overhead motor drives to keep the floor area clean and facilitate washdown. The WPS input-from-above design fits this standard equipment layout.

Mining Screen Drives

Vibrating screens and conveyor feeders in mining often have overhead motors to avoid the drive assembly from collecting ore debris. The WPS serves this application with the appropriate shaft entry geometry.

Quality Control & Certifications

Ever-power cast iron worm gearbox manufacturing facility

✎ ISO 9001:2000 Certified

We hold ISO 9001:2000 International Quality System Certification — the first in our industry category to achieve this standard. Every WPS is manufactured, assembled, and tested under this quality framework.

✎ CE Marking

Full CE marking confirms compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requirements — covering safety, design standards, and manufacturing quality for mechanical power transmission equipment.

✎ Pre-Shipment Testing

Every unit undergoes: Noise test (below 68 dB(A) at rated load), Oil leak test (30-minute pressurisation), and Torque transmission test (output torque within ±5% of rated). Failed units are reworked — not shipped.

✎ FC20+ Material Certification

Housing castings are verified by material test certificates for FC20 grade (220 MPa minimum tensile strength). Hardness testing (160–200 HB) and ultrasonic testing for internal defects are performed on size 135 and above.

Customer Reviews & Case Studies

★★★★★

“Our packaging line redesign required overhead motors for hygienic floor access. The WPS was the only cast iron gearbox we found purpose-built for this configuration. After 12 months of washdown operation, the cast iron housings remain in perfect condition.”

Angela Murphy — Food Processing Equipment Pty Ltd

Frequently Asked Questions — WPS

▶ How is the WPS different from the WPA if both are standard single-speed worm gearboxes?
The key structural difference is input shaft orientation. In the WPA (A-type), the worm shaft enters from below the gear centre. In the WPS (S-type), it enters from above. This changes bearing load directions, oil submersion depth, and installation geometry. The WPS is specifically engineered for overhead motor configurations — it is not simply a WPA rotated 180°.
▶ What is the correct oil level for the WPS in S-type orientation?
Oil fill level for the WPS differs from the WPA standard specification. Refer to the WPS installation sheet for size-specific oil quantities in S-orientation (approximately 15–20% higher fill volume than A-type). Overfilling in S-orientation can cause excessive churning losses and heating.
▶ Can the WPS be converted to WPA orientation in the field?
The WPS is designed and validated for S-orientation operation. While the unit can physically be mounted in other positions, bearing preloads and oil channel geometry are optimised for S-type input. Field conversion to A-type orientation is not recommended — use the correct WPA variant for horizontal input applications.
▶ What motor mounting accessories are available for overhead WPS installations?
Standard vertical motor mounting brackets (VM series) in steel are available as accessories. These brackets attach to the WPS foot mounting holes and provide a motor flange face at the correct height above the gearbox input shaft. Specify motor frame size when ordering brackets.
▶ Is the WPS self-locking at the same ratios as the WPA?
Yes. Self-locking characteristics are determined by the worm helix angle, which is identical between WPA and WPS for the same reduction ratio. Static self-locking applies at ratios of 1/30 and above. As with the WPA, never rely on worm self-locking for safety-critical vertical load retention.
