Description

WPDX Cast Iron Worm Gearbox — Product Overview

Inverted and below-floor drive applications that also require direct IEC motor mounting combine two specific engineering requirements that most standard gearboxes cannot address simultaneously. The WPDX Single Speed Cast Iron Worm Gearbox integrates the D-type IEC motor flange with the X-type vertically downward output shaft in one precision-machined cast iron housing. This combination serves OEM builders of below-floor conveyor systems, inverted mixer assemblies, and sub-floor material handling equipment who need the fewest possible components between motor and driven equipment without sacrificing drive performance or maintainability.

Product Structure

WPDX worm gearbox internal structure components

The WP series cast iron worm gearbox is built from precision-manufactured components, each selected for maximum performance and longevity:

■ Housing (Box Body)
FC20+ grey cast iron, precision-machined mounting faces, integrated air vent, oil gauge boss, and drain plug.
■ Worm Shaft (Input Shaft)
20CrMnTi case-hardened steel, precision-ground thread profile, 55–60 HRC surface hardness. Supported by twin tapered roller bearings.
■ Worm Wheel
Tin-bronze alloy ZCuSn10Pb1, precision hobbed tooth profile, press-fitted to cast iron hub. Provides superior anti-galling properties in the worm mesh.
■ Output Shaft
45# alloy steel, heat treated to 250–280 HB, precision-machined keyway, supported by deep groove ball bearings or tapered rollers (size-dependent).
■ Sealing System
National oil seal lips on all shaft exits. O-ring seal on housing joints. Eliminates contamination ingress and prevents lubricant loss.
■ Bearings
All bearings are premium-grade (C3 clearance class), selected for the specific radial and axial load profile of each shaft position and operating configuration.

Core Features & Benefits

■ D+X: IEC Motor Flange + Vertical Downward Output — Single Unit

The WPDX eliminates the adaptor plate (replaced by D-flange) and the right-angle head (replaced by X-type output) while adding the field-maintainability of the D-split housing. Three components replaced by one.

■ D-Split Housing for Overhead Drive Station Maintenance

For drives mounted above head height, the D-split cover can be removed downward, allowing worm wheel access from below without a platform lift. This is a significant safety and cost advantage for maintenance in elevated installations.

■ X-Type Downward Output Seal — Hydrostatic Head Rated

Identical to the WPX, the WPDX downward output oil seal is specified for the increased sealing pressure created by the oil column resting on the seal face in vertical downward orientation.

■ IEC Motor Frame 56–355 Compatibility

Direct motor mounting across the full WPDX size range (40–250 centre distance) accepts all standard IEC motor frames used in below-floor and overhead drive applications — no adaptor rings needed.

■ Continuous Duty Rating at Vertical Output Orientation

The WPDX is rated for continuous duty with the motor horizontal (IEC flange) and output vertical downward. Both bearing arrangements and oil circuits are validated for this operating configuration.

■ CE Certified, ISO 9001:2000 Quality System

Full CE marking and ISO 9001:2000 certification meets Australian Standard procurement requirements for mechanical power transmission components in engineered systems.

Industry Applications — WPDX

cast iron single speed worm gearboxes industrial applications

Below-Floor Motorised Conveyor Drives

Below-floor conveyor drives that need motorisation in situ — motor mounts direct to the IEC flange, output goes straight down through the floor plate — represent the archetypal WPDX application.

Inverted Motorised Agitators

Elevated position agitators where the motor mounts on the gearbox directly (IEC D-flange) and the agitator hangs below (X downward output) use the WPDX as their most compact motorised inverted drive solution.

Sub-Floor Screw Feeder Drives

Industrial screw feeders with the drive motor and gearbox above the floor and the screw below use the WPDX to achieve the complete motorised sub-floor drive with one compact unit.

Overhead Track Systems — Motorised Head Drives

Power and free conveyor overhead track head drives where the motor must mount directly and the drive sprocket hangs below use the WPDX for direct IEC motor mounting and downward output.

Inclined & Elevated Mining Equipment

Mining applications where the drive station sits on elevated structure and the driven equipment hangs below benefit from the WPDX motorised downward output for both operational compactness and maintenance accessibility via the D-split housing.

Quality Control & Certifications

Ever-power cast iron worm gearbox manufacturing facility

✎ ISO 9001:2000 Certified

We hold ISO 9001:2000 International Quality System Certification — the first in our industry category to achieve this standard. Every WPDX is manufactured, assembled, and tested under this quality framework.

✎ CE Marking

Full CE marking confirms compliance with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC requirements — covering safety, design standards, and manufacturing quality for mechanical power transmission equipment.

✎ Pre-Shipment Testing

Every unit undergoes: Noise test (below 68 dB(A) at rated load), Oil leak test (30-minute pressurisation), and Torque transmission test (output torque within ±5% of rated). Failed units are reworked — not shipped.

✎ FC20+ Material Certification

Housing castings are verified by material test certificates for FC20 grade (220 MPa minimum tensile strength). Hardness testing (160–200 HB) and ultrasonic testing for internal defects are performed on size 135 and above.

Customer Reviews & Case Studies

★★★★★

“WPDX units drive our below-floor screw feeders at our iron ore processing plant. IEC motor mounts direct, output shaft goes down through the floor — exactly what we needed. Split housing means inspection can be done from floor level without accessing the sub-floor pit. Outstanding practical engineering.”

Tom Nguyen — Underground Mining & Civil

Frequently Asked Questions — WPDX

▶ What is the installation sequence for mounting a motor on the WPDX in an overhead position?
1) Secure the WPDX base to the mounting structure with the output shaft pointing down. 2) Lift the motor into position above the WPDX IEC flange. 3) Lower the motor onto the flange, engaging the motor shaft into the input bore. 4) Install flange bolts and tighten to specification. 5) Apply anti-seize to flange bolt threads for future motor removal.
▶ Does the WPDX D-split housing open from above or below?
The D-split separates at the horizontal centreline of the housing. With the WPDX installed in its normal position (motor at top, output pointing down), the D-split cover is the upper half. It lifts off upward (toward the motor). The lower base half contains the worm wheel and output shaft assembly.
▶ Can the WPDX be used with a brake motor for inverted load holding?
Yes. Brake motors mount to the WPDX IEC flange exactly as standard motors. The brake is incorporated into the motor above the IEC flange. For vertically-hanging loads where back-drive prevention is critical, a brake motor is strongly recommended as the WPX worm self-locking is only a supplement, not a primary safety device.
▶ How does the oil level monitoring work when the output shaft is pointing down?
The WPX oil gauge is positioned on the housing wall at the correct height for the oil fill level in X-type (downward output) orientation. The gauge centreline position is different from the WPA/WPO gauge. Always reference the WPDX oil level at the gauge marked on the housing for the X-type orientation.
▶ Is the WPDX available with a hollow bore output (D+K+X)?
A D+K+X triple combination (IEC flange + hollow bore + downward output) is not listed in the standard catalogue. For this specific requirement, a custom specification can be engineered. Contact our technical sales team with your application requirements.
