Double-Stage Product Structure

WPEDX double speed worm gearbox internal structure

The WPE double-stage housing contains two complete worm gear stages in one precision-machined cast iron body, with two independent oil chambers:

■ Primary Stage (Input Side)
First worm shaft and bronze wheel — receives motor power, produces first reduction. Higher-speed, lower-torque stage optimised for input speed operating conditions.
■ Intermediate Shaft
Connects primary stage output to secondary stage input. Precision-machined, supported by C3-clearance bearings, transmits intermediate torque and speed between the two stages.
■ Secondary Stage (Output Side)
Second worm shaft and bronze wheel — lower speed, higher torque. Matched-pair manufacturing with primary stage ensures consistent inter-stage noise and efficiency throughout service life.
■ Dual Independent Oil Chambers
Two oil chambers — one per stage — each filled and monitored separately. Independent optimisation of lubrication viscosity and fill level per stage is a key advantage over two-gearbox cascade arrangements.
■ Air Vents & Oil Gauges (×2)
Two air vents and two oil gauges — one per chamber — provide independent pressure management and oil level monitoring for each stage throughout operation.
■ FC20+ Dual-Chamber Housing
Single FC20+ cast iron casting forms both chambers with no gaskets between them. Monolithic rigidity prevents inter-chamber flex that could misalign intermediate shaft bearings.

Core Features & Benefits

■ D-IEC Flange + X-Downward + Double-Stage: Complete Motorised Sub-Floor Drive

WPEDX achieves the motorised sub-floor drive specification in one unit: IEC motor direct mount (D-flange), downward output (X-type), extreme ratio (double-stage). All three previously required separately.

■ D-Split Housing — Sub-Floor Service Without Crane

For ceiling-mount or sub-floor drive positions, the D-split cover removal allows worm wheel service without lowering the entire gearbox. Motor stays mounted, output shaft stays connected, cover comes off — service complete.

■ Downward Output Oil Seal — Rated for Combined IEC Motor + Downward Output Geometry

WPEDX X-type downward output seal is engineered for the specific oil pressure geometry created by the combination of D-split housing and X-type output shaft orientation.

■ IEC Motor Frame Range for Sub-Floor Drive Power

Accepts motors from M8 flange (sizes 40–70, 0.12 kW) to M16 (sizes 155–250, 5.5+ kW) — providing motorised sub-floor drive capability across the full range of industrial conveyor and mixer motor sizes.

■ Output Torques to 9,066 Nm — Maximum Motorised Sub-Floor Torque

Full double-stage output torques through the X-type downward shaft — identical ratings to the WPEDA solid horizontal output — providing torque capacity for the heaviest motorised sub-floor drive applications.

■ CE Certified for Below-Floor & Overhead Installations

CE marking and ISO 9001:2000 certification covers the WPEDX in all approved installation orientations including sub-floor, ceiling-mount, and inverted configurations.

Industry Applications — WPEDX

WP double speed cast iron worm gearboxes

Motorised Sub-Floor Ultra-Slow Conveyor Drives

Below-floor motorised conveyors combining IEC direct motor, downward output, and extreme ratio are the archetypal WPEDX application — motor bolts to D-flange, output drives the sub-floor screw or chain at 1–8 RPM.

Inverted Motorised Agitators — Direct Motor Connection

Inverted agitators where the drive is above and the agitator hangs below, and the motor must mount directly via IEC flange, use the WPEDX for the complete motorised inverted drive in one unit.

Ceiling-Mount Motorised Slow Drives

Ceiling-mounted motorised drives in factories with restricted floor and wall space use the WPEDX — motor mounts on top (IEC D-flange), output hangs down, extreme ratio achieves the required slow speed.

Overhead Track System — Motorised Ultra-Slow Head Drives

Motorised overhead conveyor track head drives requiring very slow chain speeds with IEC motor direct mount and downward output to the chain drive below specify the WPEDX.

Industrial Press — Motorised Slow Downward Drive

Slow industrial pressing operations where the pressing mechanism moves downward and the motor must be directly mounted above the drive unit use the WPEDX for motorised downward output at extreme ratios.

Customer Reviews & Case Studies

★★★★★

“WPEDX on our underground below-floor drag conveyor drives. Motor bolts to IEC flange, output goes down through the floor plate at 4 RPM. Split housing means inspection from floor level without sub-floor entry — a major safety improvement. Cast iron handles the underground environment perfectly.”

Ian Fraser — Mining Conveyor Solutions Australia

Frequently Asked Questions — WPEDX

▶ How is the motor mounted on the WPEDX from a below-floor access pit?
Option 1 (top-down): Mount WPEDX base to overhead structure from above, then lower the motor downward onto the IEC flange from above. Option 2 (bottom-up): From the sub-floor pit, lift the motor upward onto the D-type IEC flange below the ceiling mount. Option 3: Fully assemble WPEDX + motor above ground, then install as a complete unit.
▶ How does the D-split cover removal work in a WPEDX ceiling-mount position?
In ceiling-mount WPEDX (base above, output pointing down), the D-split cover is the lower half. It hangs below the upper base half. To remove: loosen cover bolts and lower the cover. The upper base (with motor and driven shaft connected) remains fixed. Worm wheel and bearings are then accessible from below.
▶ Can the WPEDX be used in a horizontal orientation if needed?
WPEDX is designed and validated for D-split housing with X-type downward output. Using in horizontal orientation changes oil submersion geometry and bearing load directions in ways not rated. For horizontal IEC-flange double-stage drives, use the WPEDA (A-type horizontal output).
▶ What is the WPEDX’s self-locking performance at various ratios?
Ratio 1/200: modest self-locking. Ratio 1/400+: strong static self-locking — effective load holding under gravity. Ratio 1/800+: very strong self-locking — suitable for static hanging load retention with appropriate safety factor. For dynamic load holding, always supplement with a motor brake regardless of ratio.
▶ Is there a version of WPEDX with hollow bore output?
A D+K+X (IEC flange + hollow bore + downward output) combination in double-stage is available as a custom specification. Contact our technical sales team with your application requirements for this compound configuration.
